Droopy EyelidsSurgery

Patients with droopy eyelids, or ptosis, often complain that the condition gives them a listless or disinterested look. In more serious cases, droopy eyelids can cause obstruction to vision due to sagging of the upper eyelids.

Droopy eyelids can happen at any age, though the risk increases with age. It can also happen to one eye or both eyes. As we age, the levator muscles on our eyelids, which are responsible for lifting the eyelids, weaken and start to stretch, eventually causing the upper eyelids to sag.

How can we treat droopy eyelids?

At Colin Tham Plastic Surgery, our eyelid surgeon Dr Colin Tham offers the safe and fast option of ptosis surgery. During the surgery, the levator muscles are tightened, and any excess fat and tissue around the affected areas are also removed. This method will help to effectively elevate the drooping upper eyelid.

How long will ptosis surgery take?

Ptosis surgery is an outpatient procedure which can be done under 2 hours in our clinic. It can also be performed together with either double eyelid or eyebag surgery, or both.

Are there any complications?

Ptosis surgery is a minor surgery and is considered to be relatively risk-free. Some of the possible complications, however, include undercorrecting and overcorrecting which may cause the operated eyelids to appear too high or too low.

At our practice, you can expect a pre-surgery consultation where Dr Tham assesses the condition of your droopy eyelids. He will also tailor the surgery specifically for you to complement your facial features and to ensure symmetry of your eyes.

The downtime and recovery time may differ according to each individual. Typically, you can expect to resume normal daily activities within 5 to 10 days.

The surgery is performed under local anasthesia so it will be painless.

Post-surgery, you might experience some swelling and pain on the affected eyelid(s). These symptoms can easily be alleviated with the medications provided. Additionally, there may also be watery eyes and/or temporary blurred vision.
